My Retail experience consisted of working at McAlisters and Burger King. It was very fun and quite different from the dining centers. For one thing there were much moree student workers in fact all of the employees were students. at the dining centers only the servers are students. the environment was much smaller and cramped. Kitchen space was teeney and there were less people to manage. Also in retail you are not only serving the student population but everyone in the community.
With retial it's all about building customer loyalty. As a franchise on campus, success is not seen through revenue or profit but it is seen through customer satisfaction and also seeing students that work for these operations succeed. The jobs are kind of the foundation or the jumpstart to their careers before they jump into the real stuff.
I also learned from the retail managers that organization, communications, and delegation are crucial. You need to be well organized to run a fast paced small scale operation that numerous students are coming to. You need to be able to communicate. Without communication things start to crumble. Delegation is important too. If you need to leave or go on vacation or whatever. You need to ensure your business can run without you. This happens through delegating tasks that you do while you supervise.
In conclusion, I very much enjoyed my time at Mcalister and Burger King.
p.s. before I close this blog, I just have to comment about this really cool money counter thing they use to close out the machines. All you do is put the money on this scale and it weighs it and calculates how much is there. Very cool!
