My day as Unit Manager:
Today, I got to shadow Heather the Unit Manager at Southside. My day consisted of doing random jobs that needed doing. The Unit Manager was kind of the go to person. When you needed something done that was more than you were responsible for you went to Heather. Heather had a lot of desk work to do, and this desk work got done in little spurts as we ran from unit to unit fixing problems, checking food temps, etc.
Some of Heather's responsibilites include:
- checking foot temps
- checking and recording cooler and freezer temps
- checking to see if things were cleaned properly and if serving line is set up and looking good
- deals with employees union. Must go through the union to discipline among other things. Being involved with the union makes things really complicated.
Tips I learned throughout the day:
- Say hello to all the employees - managers need to know everyone by name
- Avoid the greaser/fryer- you could easily get burned or fall into it. It's just good to avoid all together.
- Most difficult thing is dealing with employees personalities and conflicts. To quote Heater she said something to the effect that "it's not the flour and sugar that can't get along, our inventory never has issues, it's the personalities".
Most important thing in this position is communication. Making sure everyone is on the same page and there is consistency in each shift.
Heather was never doing the same thing for half an hour. She was always up and about making sure everything was running smooth. At the conclusion of the day, I think I would really enjoy being a unit manager.
